The cat affair [Jul. 14th, 2009|01:05 pm]

diluvienne
News about the cat!

She got her stitch removed. For some silly reasons, I thought it'd be rather over after that. Silly me. I mean, once the stitch got removed, I didn't think that it could have stuck together and that the vet may need to gas her a little to make it unstick. And more obviously, I forgot that removing the stitch would lead to bleeding and swelling of her nictitating membrane and eyelid. Duh! She looked like a boxer who got a good punch on the eye!

He 1- cleaned Athéna's eye, 2- removed the stitch, 3- used anesthetic gas to unstick it all, 4- examined her eye, all that free of charge. I left the hospital paying a big zero (amount confirmed by the secretary before I left). That is one of the reasons why I love this vet. Very sensible.

I must admit that I have been a bit surprised on the spot for several reasons. One, I have a weakness for eye problems, as they make me squirm. Two, I saw my own cat drugged with a bloody eye and I have no emotional distance at all with her. Three, I wasn't thinking about what could happen after the surgery. See, while the membrane is closed, there is a formation of blood vessels that grow on the eye to provide all the necessary substances to rebuild the cornea. Once the nictitating membrane was open, I could see her uneven, freacky, bloody eye. I didn't understand on the spot why the vet said that it looks good, because it looked far from it from my point of view, but did not get it. Underneath it all is the eye and its cornea. This whole layer, albeit freakish, is a sign that it is healing underneath and will go when we start the cortisone treatment, which should be a week after the stitch removal (yeah, the tissues must heal after the removal of the thread!). I can see a third of her eye slick and shiny, as it used to be and then I understood.

Plus, a few days after the removal of the stitch, she started to be her complete full self, a first since the begining of this whole story. That is very heart-warming. :-)

Été de merde [Jul. 13th, 2009|10:16 pm]

diluvienne

This afternoon, up North on the island, a mad apocalyptic hail storm started early afternoon. I have never seen anything like this, much less so in the middle of July. "What the...?" I would say while looking at it completely flabbergasted. It lasted about 5 minutes, but during that time, I couldn't see across the street! Pellets the size of cherry pits, millions and millions of them!

Not only it rains all the time, but it now hails like mad. Are we having a shitty Summer or what?

RFID passport wardriving [Jul. 12th, 2009|10:14 am]

[Current Music |Emergency Broadcast Network -- Station Identification]

Obviously the workaround is to stay away from Fisherman's Wharf.

Zipping past Fisherman's Wharf, Chris Paget's scanner downloaded to his laptop the unique serial numbers of two pedestrians' electronic U.S. passport cards embedded with radio frequency identification, or RFID, tags. Within an hour, he'd "skimmed" four more of the new, microchipped PASS cards from a distance of 20 feet.

"There's a reason you don't wear your Social Security number across your T-shirt," Albrecht says, "and beaming out your new, national RFID number in a 30-foot radius would be far worse."

But Gigi Zenk, a spokeswoman for the Washington state Department of Licensing, says Americans "aren't that concerned about the RFID" in a time when "tracking an individual is much easier through a cell phone."

What should I do with my site? [Jul. 12th, 2009|11:47 am]

Many of you know my SCA website, The SCA Without Breaking the Bank, and some of my other sites like my Europe journal, my March of the Living journal, my London journal, and the greybeard of them all, The Procrastinator's Aid.

I have a problem. All of these sites are hosted by Geocities, and Geocities is going to be closing on October 26 of this year.

I have a number of options:
1. Just let it die. It's been a good run, and I don't really update it much anymore.
2. Recreate the pages on Home of the Pocket Bard or a new, free site. (Or some combination thereof.)
3. Upgrade to Yahoo web hosting, for $5 a month for the first year and $10 thereafter.

Some of the pages, like The Procrastinator's Aid, I don't really care about anymore and I should probably let it die a quiet death. I was thinking of moving my journals over to Home of the Pocket Bard in any case, especially the Europe and Pennsic journals, and probably the March and London journals as well.

The only thing I really don't know what to do with is The SCA Without Breaking the Bank. I don't update it much anymore, but it has valuable information that I would be sad to lose if the site disappeared. I've got all the HTML already, so it would be pretty simple to shift it over to a new host, but I don't like the idea of paying money for something I don't really use. It's still getting about 70 hits a week, and I'd have to redirect traffic somehow, no matter what I do. (With option 3, above, it's done automatically.)

Anyone have any thoughts?

Ouch [Jul. 12th, 2009|04:18 am]

swestrup
I woke up after yesterday's party feeling fine. No hangover or anything. However, as the day progressed I noticed my right shoulder getting stiff, followed by the right side of my neck and back. Even after a few hours application of a heating pad to the area in question, moving my head is both difficult and painful. I wonder how I'm supposed to sleep like this.

Torchwood. [Jul. 11th, 2009|11:02 pm]

swestrup
Just saw the last of this season's Torchwood episodes. It was dark, dark, dark. Really not sure where they think they're going with the series. Right now it looks like the existence of a 4th season is still up in the air. They sure seem to have a strange way of running series in the UK. (Not that N.A. doesn't have its share of WTF decisions in TV-land.)

I’ve just self-published two huge photo books about The Batcavbe. Covers and all details are behind the cut. I realise it may not be specifically geo-centric, but hopefully it is of interest to anyone interested in Goth.

End of a long day, waiting for another [Jul. 10th, 2009|10:10 pm]

[Tags|, , , , ]

In the end, worked an hour and a half of overtime today getting the first third of the file ready. All the heavy lifting is done, but I expect to need at least 3 hours tomorrow to finish it up. This will be the first time since I started working at this company that I need to come in on a Saturday, which I suppose is good in that it's been 14 months without Saturday work, but sucks in that there is Saturday work this weekend.

Marc's not home. There's a rather large (15-20 acre) fire in the southern part of the Miles City district (in which he serves the south-east part), so he may be there. Or he just might not be home yet. You never know.

Went to get my money back from the STM for the muck-up with trying to put money on my Opus card through their machine. I have the proof from the bank and everything that the transaction went through. The STM's response: "It wasn't our problem; it was a problem with Interac. All the banks except Scotia and Bank of Montreal have already refunded the money. Scotia is still delaying and will probably do it next week." So... sucks to be me, with an account at Scotia. Grumble, grumble.

Went home, took a shower, tried several times to call Marc (in vain), and now will be going to bed.

On the upside, breakfast with Freya and Ernst was lovely. They're both off at GNE now, and more power to 'em.

On the agenda tomorrow: work in the morning, maybe a long call to California in the early afternoon (if I come home for it), tea with a friend at 4, party in the evening starting around 7. Whew! Better get some sleep!

I am now in Montreal. I know that people have emailed me and I've made promises and such, but I'll get to it when I can. It'll be crazy here for the next few days.

The drive itself was interesting...some moments of bliss and intensity and even some that were downright terrifying, but mostly it was just long stretches of boredom. I have learned two things: a) sometimes the unknown can be much much more gratifying than the known and b) always be kind to strangers.

But that's not important. What's important is that I managed to find time to photograph once. This is tyskvinna. Means German Girl in Swedish, I think - she reminds me of a German girl who was dating a friend of mine some years back. She was a violinist and I was jealous that he had her and I couldn't.

Of course. [Jul. 10th, 2009|02:06 pm]

For the first time in a while, I actually had some overtime saved up this week, and I was planning on balancing it out by leaving early today. (Which is encouraged by management, if production allows.)

So of course I'm sitting here at 2 pm with an estimated at least 6 hours of work to do, still haven't had lunch, and I'm on kitchen-cleaning duty this week which will probably take another 30-45 minutes to do.

I'm gonna be here till 9 o'clock. Or longer.

I think it's time to talk to our coordinators and see if anything can be done.

Update: It now looks like I won't be here until 9 or later. I offered to come in tomorrow morning to finish it up. It's not an ideal solution for anyone involved, but it's the best we can do under the circumstances.
